This was another one night airport transfer trip to Milan. Two nights before leaving, my dad discovered that the hotel he booked, because it was part of a chain, was actually the wrong location, and it was actually a lot further from the airport than what would be convenient. It was an amendable booking, so he started looking at other options.
Mum’s been pushing for a non-chain hotel for as long as I can remember; they definitely were really adventurous when it was just me and the two of them (and before me), I’ve heard stories of them taking me to random towns and finding a hotel that looked nice from the outside and going in and enquiring about spaces. The time before internet and overplanning…
Hotel Villa Borghi, a palatial structure with all modern amenities, about half an hour away from Milan Malpensa Airport, in Italy’s Lake district, surrounded by 6,5 hectares of park.
They had just started preparing for a wedding party the next day.
We could see the pool, the lake and the mountain from our bedroom.
The town, Varano Borghi, is a very small and old town, but it does have a swanky new gelateria, where we went after dinner at Villa Borghi’s pizzeria, which isn’t in the old building, but rather next to the modern buildings they have created for conferences. The Villa Borghi building has a restaurant which is divided into two rooms. The pizzeria was probably recommended to us because they were busy preparing for the wedding the next day, but they still took us through all of the rooms of the restaurant so we could see it.
We ate breakfast the next morning in the outdoor tables overlooking the pool and the grounds before heading to the airport.
